The number one mistake most new affiliate marketers make is to build other people's assets. Now if you've never gone to college to get a business degree or you've never run your own business before, it's entirely possible you don't even know what an asset is. An asset is something of value owned by you or your company.

A product is an asset that you sell to other people.

The other day I was reading a story of a very successful affiliate marketer that earns over a million dollars a year. Now what was really interesting was the way that he was able to boost his sales by over 900 percent using an advanced marketing technique.

Affiliate marketing is fairly straight forward. You need to start out by driving all your traffic to a squeeze page where you can add all your subscribers to an autoresponder. Whatever the method of payment, make sure that both you and the merchant have all of the relevant information.

It could take weeks or a couple of months before you start to see results. If you feel that you can't wait, then this is probably not the market for you. Anyone who promises that you can get rich quick with affiliate marketing is just after your money.

5. This is not an easy way to make money. Like I said above, it takes a lot of hard work and time, just to learn how things work and get the initial accounts set up, then you have to put in the work marketing your product. This is not a market for someone looking to make an easy buck.

6. Staying focused. It is really easy to get sidetracked when you are doing work on the internet and before you know it hours have gone by and you haven't done anything. If you are an affiliate marketer or just a marketer that creates your own products you need to read this important message. It is a common problem on the internet that product promotion and advertising may revolve around less than average products. Let's say that you were offered an incredible product and it met all of your needs so you decide to go to the store and purchase the product. Once you get the product home you put it to the test and find out that it only delivers on half of its claims. What would you do in this situation? I would go back to the store and return the product for a full refund and from that moment on I would think twice before buying anything from that store.

I am sure that you can relate because we have all been through it, this is also very true on the internet. Regardless if you are a new or very experienced affiliate marketer, I am going to start by asking you one specific question: how many affiliate products are you marketing right now? If you answer this question with only one, two or three affiliate products, you have it all wrong. What you are doing is trying a couple of products, waiting to see if they make money and when they don't, dump them and move on to the next ones. Using this method you will never generate income unless you happen to be very lucky. Tiny portfolios with huge turnover will never work. From my experience, this is the main mistake both new and seasoned affiliate marketers make. You must stop this zombie mentality of doing the same thing over and over if you want to succeed as an affiliate marketer.

Guess what, it is not our fault that most of us start out with this mentality because that is exactly what the big dogs of the affiliate world teach us. They want you to find random affiliate products through trial and error before moving into the larger affiliate market. Why, because by the time you actually learn something from your trial and error affiliate marketing, you have already lost a substantial amount of money. Thus, you will never make it to larger affiliate markets. So when managing your portfolio, make sure you always have at least 5 to 10 affiliate products.

Your portfolio should change constantly and always be in a dynamic phase. When you find a good product, add it to your portfolio. When the demand for one product starts to diminish steadily do not hesitate to remove it. I was doing some research for a friend who was looking to start her own internet business and came across a scam that you as internet marketers should be aware of. She was looking at a turnkey site for the adult industry. She looked at one that cost $500 to start and $50 a month for hosting, where she would receive 80% of the profits.

Some of you may be saying, well it's not her content so she must share the profit. That would seem to be what the $500 and recurring monthly $50 was for. If it is her site then she should get 100% of the money. What we had was a system in place where she was expected to pay to be an affiliate (and through the nose). She could easily have gone to many other sites and negotiated a regular affiliate account where she could have made as much as 70% with no other fees.

So my friends, while this may or not be a scam in your mind, I will say it is not a good use of your dollars towards making money online. The $500 to start up and $50 a month could have gone to pay for advertising an actual site, where revenues were generated and money was made rather then taken to fatten someone else's wallet prior to any traffic.

That money could have gone to place ads in classifieds, or PPC (pay per click) ads on Google, or solo ads in ezines. Don't let someone make you pay to join their affiliate program. There are many great free opportunities, many at clickbank. Put your money to work for you and don't be taken advantage of. If I had a nickel (hey, I think I do) for every time someone asked me: "Lauren......how can I get started in Internet Marketing - I know absolutely nothing about computers or marketing let alone Internet Marketing, but I keep hearing how easy it is. What should I do?

First off, it is true....it is incredibly easy. But just like with anything else, you should not go into it blindly and recklessly. Have a plan. If you fail to plan, then plan to fail.

The first thing you should do is a little research for a mentor with a great program that teaches Affiliate Marketing. Do a Google search, pick about 5 or 6 names, and then research them. What you are looking for is a mentor with a program that teaches through video tutorials. Knowledge is retained much quicker and much deeper with a visual aid to go along with the audio. Next make sure there is a Help Desk Website or an 800 number for when you have questions. Your mentor should have weekly or biweekly Live Training Calls as well. Lastly find out how long he/she has been doing this and how much money they are earning on a monthly basis. They should have a couple years behind them, and bringing in an obscene income each month. There are 3 major reasons why Affiliate is the way to go.

1) You don't have to come up with your own product. That can be very time consuming, and you do not have time for that just starting out. You promote other people's products, focusing on informational and digital products, through promoting websites like Clickbank and Pay.com. This is the fastest and easiest way to make money online.

2) You can create multiple streams of income with very little effort, by being an affiliate, simply by being a great promoter. You give the right market what they want, solving a problem for them. Most any website offers an affiliate program, but you will find Clickbank, Pay.com and Commission Junction pay a better percentage.

3) VERY LOW START UP COST. When you stop and think about it, it is truly amazing that you can become financially free with such low start up cost. In affiliate marketing, any component websites are either free or a one time low cost fee. As your income streams grow, you can implement more elaborate features into your cash machine. Nowhere else on Earth will you find this kind of income, costing next to nothing to start up.

That's it! Don't complicate things, get with your mentors Affiliate Program, and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS they provide. They wouldn't take the time to put it into your training if it wasn't necessary. By the way, the #1 reason why people fail at Affiliate Marketing or any other Internet Business is by not following ALL the instructions. Affiliate marketing commission theft is real and could be just one of the reasons you are not seeing a profit from your hard work. An online thief could visit your website and replace your affiliate links with their own links. When a sale is made, the thief will get a commission and you will receive nothing in return. Another problem with affiliate links is the fact that some people do not want you to receive money when they buy something online.

To get around this, they will remove your affiliate link to go directly to the main page of a company. To stop both of these money losing problems, you should engage in link cloaking technology. A simple internet search will bring up different ways to do it along with programs and codes that may be helpful to you.

Affiliate marketing commission structures is another topic that you should become very intimate with. If you don't understand the structures, you may choose the wrong one when asked to make a decision. The first structure is widely used in most affiliate programs and it is the 1-tier option. You will generally get paid whenever someone signs up to receive a service or product and it is simple to understand.

4.Build A Niche Store teaches you better search engine practices so that you get better listings on the search engines. This means more traffic to your site and ultimately more money for you!

5. There are tons of resource materials. If you have a question or need some more information about something, it is right there. With all the hype and scams surrounding many of these products out there, how does one choose the right business for yourself to succeed in the online digital world? Undeniably, having your own products is perhaps the best form of running an online business. You could pocket all the money you make and be in total control of your business. However, the major downside is that you need to create everything from product design to delivery from scratch. Most importantly, you still need to have a very good idea to start off with, if you do not already have one!

Most people, just like myself, started off with selling or promoting third party's product, or more commonly known as Affiliate Marketing. Stand out among a smaller crowd is better than getting drowned in the sea yet no one will even notice!
2. Once you found the right product and keywords, you need to establish your sales strategy, i.e., how do you intend to promote your product over the internet? Basically, you need to come up with the sales page and with it the relevant content. Your sales page must be attractive enough to entice people to purchase your product. Some technical know-how to construct the webpage is required to do this. Alternatively, you may use ready-made templates from website builder software that offers this. If this sounds too technical for you, you may also engage professional or third party developers to do this for a fee. However, bear in mind that this can become rather costly for starters.
3. Next you need to purchase a suitable domain name (or website URL) for your business. Besides, you need to purchase a hosting plan in order to host all your product data and web pages, including the domain. Some level of technical know-how is required here, such as how to host the information, transfer files from your PC to the host, allow the domain name to be hosted on your site, etc.
4. If you are selling your own product, you will need to put up a Shopping Cart or at the very least, a payment button where one can make payment through credit card. You need to cater for refund as well in the event where you offer product satisfaction guarantee.
5. Once the above are done and tested, the good news is that your website is considered done and ready to launch. However, this is far from over. You need to learn how to attract traffic to your website so that potential sales can be made. The higher the traffic, the more likelihood your prospects will buy. Just imagine this, a highway without traffic is as good as no business even if your shop is placed at the most strategic spot of the highway!
6. There are many ways to attract traffic to your website. These are some of them:

A very common mistakes new affiliate marketers tend to make is choosing to promote an affiliate product purely because of the commission percentages offered by the product owner. And believe it or not, this can be a big mistake that's costing you a lot of money.

While on the surface, a commission percentage of 50% looks a heck of a lot better than 10%, sometimes you'll find it's not really as good as it looks. Why? Because high commissions are generally paid on lower cost products, while lower commissions are often paid for high ticket items.

If you actually do the math, you might be surprised to discover that the low 10% commission stands to make you a lot more money than a 50% commission does.

Say for instance, you find an ebook that fits your niche and it offers a 50% sales commission to affiliates. If that ebook sells for $30, then you'll earn $15 for each sale you make.

Now let's say you come across a merchant shop online which sells physical goods in your niche, and you'd like to promote those as an affiliate too. This merchant offers only 10% commissions on each sale though.

Does it seem low compared to the 50% commission? At first glance absolutely. But take a look at the products you'll be promoting through that merchant. If they're selling evenly moderately priced items - say at $200 average - then you'll earn $20 per sale.

And imagine finding a merchant who's average order totals about $1000... You'd earn $100 per sale even at that seemingly small 10% commission amount.

And this is where new affiliate marketers run into a lot of income problems. They automatically try to promote products which pay very high commissions even if those percentages equate to small dollar amounts in their bank accounts, and they immediately dismiss affilite products which pay smaller commissions too - without even thinking about it.

I've seen many online articles and courses actually advise affiliates to not bother promoting affiliate products which pay less than 50% commissions too. And that's just bad business advice.

Don't make decisions about which products you'll promote as an affiliate based solely on the commission percentages paid. Instead, take a bit of time to do the math, and find out what the actual dollar amount in earnings will be. Then make the decision as to which product to promote the most.

It's incredible the number of people wanting to earn money online who just sign up for an affiliate marketing program and then wonder why they are not making any money. How many times do you need to hear that there are no quick and easy ways to earn large sums of money on the internet? I would be very dubious that anyone other than the website owners could make any money with these.

If you want to earn money from affiliate marketing, you do have to put in some effort. If you already own a website and get traffic to it, then your work is already cut out for you: you need to choose a product related to your website that you can write about; you can write a review praising the merits of your chosen product, place some advertisements on your website for it: the program you signed up for should provide you with a code containing your affiliate ID that will bring your website's visitors to the product's website when they click on that link, and if they decide to buy the product you will earn a commission.

If you do not have a website, you can either get one (nowadays there are tools that can easily let you set up a more than passable-looking website), set up a free blog or even a Squidoo lens on a topic you are passionate about and write reviews as I have described above. Keep in mind that you will need some time and effort to build up the necessary traffic that will allow you to make one sale; you will have to read up on SEO and traffic-building, be patient and not lose hope.

If you do not wish to choose a product to promote but still want to be an affiliate marketer with Clickbank, one of the most rewarding affiliate program online, you can get a Clickbank portal, which is a great tool: it is a free website that also comes with free hosting and that allows you to promote the 10000 products from Clickbank's marketplace; when you sign up you will automatically have your Clickbank affiliate ID inserted in the 10000 products of your portal so you don't even need to know anything about coding or websites, all you have to do is bring visitors to so that you can earn commission on whatever product they decide to buy.

When you start advertising affiliate marketing programs on Google Adwords and MSN, you will probably find that you have to bid quite high for your ads. You need to know how much you can afford to bid, and bid no more. So let's start with how much you can afford to spend.

As a rule, you should get two sales for each 100 clicks on a good advert with a good product that is in demand. This is a ballpark figure to use when you start off - it is not guaranteed, but is typical.

Work out what you can afford to pay

Let us assume that you get paid $25 for each sales, which is what you should aim for with digital download products. If you get two sales you will earn $50, which means the maximum amount you can afford to spend on each click on the ads is $50 divided by 100 = $0.50.

If you grab a big list of keywords, you will probably find that the bids for many are high. For example, the bid for something competitive like 'dog food' will be high, and Adwords will not accept your low bid. It will tell you that the keyword is pending until you raise the bid. You might have to raise it to $1.00, which would mean making a loss.

Your ad is not considered relevant

Why is this? Because Google has decided that your advert is not relevant to the keyword, and also that your landing page is not relevant. The answer is not that difficult: it is to make sure that the ad copy and keyword are relevant to each other, and that the landing page has that keyword quite often on the page. Ideally, there will be one page for each keyword, or each few keywords.

To do this, you will need to reduce the number of keywords you bid on. This is not a bad thing because your ads and keywords will naturally have more relevance to each other, and you will get more clicks. It is a bad idea to have a list of, say, 500 keywords, for this reason.

Set up campaign groups

The other thing you should do is to divide the keywords into different campaigns. If you were advertising dog food, you could have one Ad Group for dry dog food, one for tinned dog food, and another for homemade dog food and so on. This way you can make sure that each ad is relevant to each keyword. It is also a good idea to have one word from your advert in every key phrase in a group.

If you follow this strategy for advertising affiliate marketing programs, you will reduce the cost of each Ad. It is also a good idea to have one landing page for each ad group, so you maintain the relevance there.

Finally, to cut the cost do not bid high enough for the top spot. The top advertiser gets a lot of impulse clicks, which click away when they see this is an ad, and the second ad gets quite a few too. Don't be in too much of a hurry to get sales!

If you go for the third or fourth spot, you will get better quality traffic and quite a lot of clicks.

Resale rights products are nothing new to online marketers, but I am astounded at just how few affiliate marketers are using these products to leverage more sales. There are many different types of "Rights Products" that you can purchase. This article will simply focus on Master Resale Rights.

It does not matter if you are a veteran marketer or "brand spanking new" to the business. There are millions of affiliates online marketing everything from pantyhose to pool tables. And that means, that there will be plenty of competition if your niche is somewhat profitable. I am going to give you a picture in your head, it is one that many affiliates do not even think about. Your customer arrives at your affiliate sales page and likes your product or service, but wants to shop around a little bit more before hitting the pay button. They still sign up for more information and your auto responder "Kicks into action", everything still seems good from your perspective.

But while they are out shopping around a little more they see an ad that says, don't buy "The Widget" until you check out our deal. Oh yes, these ads are all over the place on google if you just look a little bit. Your prospect visits this other affiliates site and sees that they are offering a package of bonus products if they sign up or purchase from their site. The customer is not a idiot and knows a better deal when he/she sees it and purchases on the spot. You lose the sale and worse yet, is that you never even knew it.

Now to make things really crummy, you have captured the customers email and your auto responder is following up with them, but the messages sent to them are geared solely toward selling them that product. Eventually they un-subscribe and you have gained "zero, zip, zilch, nada.

How do you combat this, increase the odds in your favor and make the sale? Simple, you probably have some products sitting on your hard drive that you downloaded from some free giveaway event. Go wipe the dust off of them, unzip them and see if they offer resale rights or giveaway rights.

If so you are in luck, set up a bonus page or rework your existing affiliate sales page to offer these products to your customers if they sign up or buy from you. It will take some effort on your part, if you are completely hopeless at editing web pages than outsource for a small fee to someone on elance or rentacoder, two excellent places to find expert programmers and designers.

Also build a sign up page (squeeze page) for people to subscribe for more info and follow up about your product. Once they have signed up as a subscriber give them information that they can use, do not jam sales hype down their throats. Over time, as you begin to understand just how powerful resale rights products are to earn money online, start investing in them here and there and organize them. You can package them into niches and offer them to your subscribers for even more sales down the road.

Your affiliate sales and commissions will increase quickly as will your monthly income, thanks to understanding the power that resale rights offer you. Put yourself into your customers shoes, it is something that many affiliates neglect. Would you purchase the "widget" for $49.95 from site A, or would you purchase the widget from site B, that offers incentives and bonuses? Yes, you answered site B as everyone else did.

Affiliate marketing is one of the fastest, easiest ways to get started with making money online. This is also popular, because it can be started in your spare time, and sometimes (though I don't recommend it) you can make money without even having your own website. Now, there are many ways to increase the amount of money you make with your affiliate marketing efforts, and one of those ways is to promote two tier affiliate programs.

A two tier affiliate program allows you to earn sales commissions from any sales you make, just as regular affiliate programs do. The difference though, is that if you refer a new affiliate marketer to the same affiliate program, and they sign up, they will be listed as your sub affiliate. Then as they start making affiliate sales of their own, you will start earning small commissions from their sales too.

Now, this doesn't really sound like much in the beginning, but once you know how it can add up you'll see just how lucrative this type of affiliate marketing can be.

In most cases, you get affiliate sales commissions of a certain percentage. How much the percentage is will vary widely from one affiliate program to another, but on average they can range from 10% - 50% of the sales price. With two tier affiliate programs, you also earn commissions from sales that other affiliates have made. This commission level is usually much smaller. If you're earning 50% commissions with your own sales for instance, then you might only get 5% - 10% commissions from the sub affiliate sales.

It's important to note here: When you earn commissions from your sub affiliate's sales, you are not taking part of their sales commissions. They will still get the normal sales commission for the sale, and your bonus commission will come from the merchant's share. So you are not hurting other affiliates by having them sign up to an affiliate program under you.

The commissions you earn from sub affiliates usually does not seem like much. In fact, many inexperienced affiliate marketers feel the sub affiliate commissions aren't worth trying for since they seem to be so low. The power in this affiliate marketing technique though, comes in volume. If you have just one sub affiliate who makes $100 in commissions a month, you might earn just $5 from their efforts. If however, you have 500 sub affiliates who each earn $100 a month, and you earn $5 from each of them, then you're looking at an extra $500 per month in extra money. And that's in addition to your own affiliate sales commissions too.

Not all affiliates make sales though, so not all of your sub affiliates will earn you extra commissions. There could be some however, who make thousands of dollars of sales a month, and you may earn hundreds of extra dollars just from their efforts alone. If you have a lot of small affiliates though, who all earn at least a little each month, then you are sure to be earning a combined amount from all of their efforts. And this adds up very nicely over the long haul.

During the Great Depression of the 1930's, jobs were scarce and people were lucky to make a dollar a day. A new car cost $800. Morris, a guy in his early twenties, had an eighth-grade education, but made over $200 a week; that's over $7000 in today's dollars. How did he do it and what can we learn from this to make us successful today?

There was a laundry/dry-cleaning plant in the town where Morris lived. The owner needed more business, so he offered Morris a deal. "You go out and solicit cleaning and laundry; bring it in and tag it. I'll charge you half of the regular price. You charge regular price and keep the difference. You pay all of your own expenses."

The plant owner offered the same deal to many people, but most turned him down. People wanted a salary, a guarantee, expenses or a car. After all, "Why should I risk my own car and gas money to help someone else's business?"

Morris took the deal. He recognized this as a chance to have his own business without any sizeable investment. He had a car and a few bucks for gas.

Morris created a laundry/dry-cleaning pickup and delivery business in a rural area outside the town, by driving up and down country roads knocking on doors. He discovered that even in a serious depression, many farm people could come up with a dollar to have a clean suit or dress for church on Sunday. He also discovered, in a nearby town, a house of ill repute that always had a load of sheets on Monday mornings. I guess some people could find a dollar for other things too.

The cleaning plant got extra business, the customers got excellent service and Morris made a good living.

Now there are several valuable business lessons to be learned here; lessons that you can use in today's high-tech world.

• You can create your own business from selling someone else's products or services.
• Two businesses working together can be more successful than two businesses working apart.
• It is OK to help someone else succeed.
• Risk taking can be rewarding.
• Having knowledge can reduce your risk and increase your chances of success. In this case, Morris was familiar with those back roads from a previous job.
• Having your own business requires some type of investment, usually some combination of time, money and knowledge.

Once you have a thorough understanding of what is occurring, you then combine these methods with your personal beliefs of what could work even better. Your goal is to create something out of the ordinary, while staying relevant to your target.

Third is lead:

Now that you are organized and ready to implement your unique plan, you must be prepared to take the lead. Every individual you encounter will not always find your brilliant idea brilliant.

That does not mean you immediately alter your work. Ask these people (if you can) what they dislike, because their input may serve you well. However, if the advice they offer does nothing for you, then do not fret over it.

The idea is to see how many more people enjoy your work, compared to how many people dislike your work.

This is how you become a functional affiliate marketer. Again, first you have to learn how to spot opportunity within opportunity. Then you recreate that opportunity by meshing it with your own nature of who you are. Then you have to play follow the leader, in which you are the conductor, being aware of all who are following your path... Paying attention to what they like, what they dislike, and so on...

If you want to consider Affiliate Marketing to help you generate additional income, you need to consider its advantages and pitfalls.

We often are bombarded with videos or blogs / emails or in an ebook where an individual claims to earn $50,000 or $500,000 per month. More so if the time it takes them to earn this income is relatively short, like 6 months to a year. In your mind, you would be thinking whether this is possible or is it for real!

The major advantage with promoting as an affiliate is you get a ready proven product with a sales page that works (assuming you do your research properly). That relieves you of one burden; product creation and making a sales page. So it leaves you free to concentrate on the other problem; getting traffic.

To that extent, affiliate marketing is a best way to start but, because it is not your own product, you don't get 100% of the sale and there is no scope for doing joint ventures or having your own affiliates.

You need to generate your own traffic from nothing. If you are just beginning, be careful of spending huge amount on advertising such as AdWords because if you do not do it right, it can clear your bank account faster than a hacker. An advise would be to look carefully at claims of vast earnings by people in a short space of time to see how much of that gross figure is actual profit.

If someone collects $50,000 in commissions but spends $40,000 on AdWords, they would probably sleep better at night if they used all the time they have to spend monitoring their AdWords account, on marketing methods that cost nothing but a bit of time (such as articles, Squidoo, HubPages and others). Not only do you get better and more receptive customers from these methods than from advertising (you get to pre-sell yourself), but it is perfectly possible you could match the $10,000 or even exceed the profit achieved by risking vast amounts with AdWords, yet all you have risked is a bit of your time. And articles and Squidoo lenses stay around for ages, unlike an ad, which requires a constant trickle of cash to keep going.

Plus, with affiliate marketing, you have the added problem of having to battle with other affiliates selling the same product. You have to be more bolder than them, spend more cash, take more chances and so on.

Affiliate Marketing is not necessarily quick and easy. If you are willing to learn and work hard, it will be fantastic. But if you go in thinking it is quick and easy you could be disappointed. For every person who made it, there are 5,000 other affiliates that have been at it for over a year and still trying to make it to their first $300.

Each choice we make today affects the direction we are heading in and choices we will make later. Learning to choose wisely may be the hardest obstacle to overcome in building a viable business. In conclusion, this is your business and you have to take all things into consideration before venturing into this business. As an entrepreneur and business owner, it's a given that you are constantly thinking of ways to grow your business and increase your profits. Joint venturing is a great way to do just that. The customers loved the product, the salon owner saw a profit, and the business owner increased her market share and profit. It was a win-win all the way around. Of course, other businesses have now contacted the small business owner about the product and are looking to see if there are other products she might be able to bring to the table on behalf of their businesses.

In the scenario above, the small business owner took the risk of giving time and the initiative of approaching another business owner. She looked to see how it could benefit the other business first. Needless to say, there is a strong on-going relationship between the salon owner and the small businesswoman. Think about the benefit to your potential joint venture partner, put together an operating strategy, and reap the mutual rewards.

Remember back before the internet? Well if you don't, the business world worked something like this:

You run a little shop on Main St. selling office supplies. A lot of local business owners come into your shop to buy their paper and type writer ribbons. Being the friendly sort, you chat with your customers and get to know them pretty well. In the 90s we called that "networking". Every so often a customer would mention they needed to find a good lawyer or banker or accountant. That was when you introduced them to one of your other customers. As a thank you for the referral of business, you are given a little bit of cash, a gift certificate for dinner or maybe even tickets to a ball game.

Now in the 21st century, old fashion friendliness and networking has given way to Affiliate Marketing, but the concept is still the same. With affiliate marketing, you introduce people who need something with those who can sell it to them online. In return, they share a portion of the profits with you. It really is that simple.

So now you ask, how do I get started? Well, the first step is to find one or two affiliate programs you want to participate in. Choose ones that offer a good compensation plan and provide products you feel good about endorsing.

These programs can be found in two ways. You can go to particular websites that you like and look at their pages to see if they have an affiliate program. Or it you do not have a particular company in mind, go to an affiliate mall like Commission Junction (www.cj.com) or Click Bank (www.clickbank.com) and shop their various affiliate programs.

Once you find the programs you want to promote, it is time to promote them. Some of the most common and inexpensive ways are free classified ads, article writing with links in the byline (note, some article sites do not allow affiliate links), posting in forums with the link in your signature (do not spam, post intelligently), putting the link on other websites or blogs you may keep, and posting on plug boards.

As with most things in life there are a few principles which followed can greatly assist you in being successful. Working in the field of affiliate marketing is no different. 2. Affiliate marketing does require some financial investments. The old saying that it "Takes Money to Make Money" is also true in affiliate marketing. You must be willing to spend money for some professional training, if you want to know what will succeed and what will not. You may need assistance in the development of a marketing strategy, development of a web site and building an effective affiliate product base. If done correctly, your small investments will lead you to a good profit.

3. Affiliate marketing requires proper education and preparation. On rare occasions someone can strike it big with lucky, but in order to have a solid business you need to begin with proper education on the affiliate market program. This training will also assist you in being prepared for those events which you could not have expected without experience in the field. By studying others, it is possible to repeat their successes and to avoid those things which caused them problems.

4. Affiliate marketing requires knowledge of the best affiliate products and merchants. You need to conduct research on each product you are considering. Not every product is right for everyone. You need to determine which ones are best for you and that you believe you can successfully sell. If you believe in the product it is much easy to get other to believe also.

5. Affiliate marketing requires a well-planned and executed website. You must get your information in front of your readers to get them to consider your products. The better your plan and your web site, the better your chance of ranking higher on search engine and other links. If you can increase your exposure, you can increase your sales.

6. Affiliate marketing relies on constant traffic interested in your message and effective tracking methods. If you can attract a large number of visits to your website, you are increasing your potential for sales. You need a method to know how you are doing at attracting this attention, so you will know what is working and what is not working. You should also try to determine a method to gain feedback about your web site, the more interested the viewer is in your site, the better chance they will return and the better chance for more sales.

7. Affiliate marketing succeeds by incorporating ongoing familiarity with the latest strategies and techniques. You must always work to improve and be up to date. If your web site does not improve or incorporate the latest trends, you will be left behind by those that do. Know what is happening and what others are looking for, this will keep you out in front for their needs. If you are not willing and able to commit to these principles, the affiliate marketing may not be right for you. But if you are ready to get started on what can provide to be an exciting opportunity, print out a copy of these principles and keep them as a handy reminder of what is required to be a success in this exciting field.

Always make sure that you test whatever product it is that you are going to promote before placing your own recommendation for others to give it a try. As with anything else, your own reputation is important and you would not want to arm it by promoting something that did not meet your own standards.

Once you have found one or several products or services to promote, you will next need to consider what type of web site you would like to build and which hosting company to utilize. Here are a few factors to consider when reviewing hosting locations:

1. Bandwidth being offered
2. Disk space made available
3. mysql databases they offer
4. Hosting multiple web sites

Just as important as location, is the type of web site that you build. Your goal in the beginning should be for as simple and direct a web site as you believe you can use. A possibility is a direct response web site. This mainly focuses on collecting names and email information in exchange for a free report that you produce or have received as a giveaway from somewhere else.

Develop your list

The use of autoresponders makes this much easier. You can configure you autoresponder to collect information through the use of opt-in from your web site. Your goal in building these lists is to keep in contact with the people on your list and build some kind of relationship with them. Once you have a good list, exposing them to your products and making sales should be much easier.

Maximizing for Profit

There are many possibilities for this part of your plan but it is one that should not be forgotten. One way that has shown success is to lead visitors from your opt-in page to a thank-you page which includes information on a product that you are promoting. You then have the visitor exist your thank-you page through this product page, thus increasing exposure and the possibility for a sale.

With effective research and experience, you should be able to build on this plan and develop a successful business. As always, once you have an idea, develop a plan for implementation and you are sure to reach the success you are hoping for.

Since the launch of Amazon.com in 1995, the number of affiliate marketing programs offered on the internet has grown enormously. Although Amazon.com was one of the pioneers with their affiliate program, other affiliate providers such as eBay and Clickbank now arguably offer a more diverse and profitable affiliate program.

The eBay Affiliate Program

Put simply, eBay launched their affiliate program to obtain more targeted traffic to their site. Originally many webmasters used the eBay affiliate program simply to make additional revenue from their existing web site. This has changed recently with an advancement in the quality of RSS feeds leading to a number of different affiliate store scripts flooding the market. These affiliate store scripts have created a new phenomenon where new eBay affiliates establish an affiliate store as the primary purpose of their web site and then add relevant content. EBay affiliates are now creating web sites that are established primarily to make affiliate commissions and not necessarily to provide useful and relevant content for the visitor.

My eBay Affiliate Store

I have an interest in golf and established my own eBay affiliate golf store called davesgolfstore.com using an eBay affiliate store script called Build A Niche Store. I provide my own web site content and have a direct feed of products from eBay. Every product listed on eBay under the golf category is displayed on my site in real time. When somebody clicks on a set of golf clubs listed on my site they are taken directly to eBay. If they place a successful bid I receive a commission from eBay ranging from 20-65% of eBays income. When I refer a new customer to eBay who makes a successful bid I receive a commission up to $24. The one downside of being an eBay affiliate is that you rely heavily on generating organic traffic from top listings on the search engines. The average commission I receive per sale is between $1-2. These commissions are quite small and it makes it difficult to use other traffic generating methods such as pay per click advertising. Given the search engines constantly update their page ranking algorithms, the inherent risk is it becomes difficult to generate consistent traffic as you rely heavily on organic searches.

Clickbank Affiliate Program

Clickbank offers an affiliate program that is primarily associated with promoting digital products that are predominantly ebooks. Similar to eBay, ClickBank has a diverse range of products to promote over a number of different categories across a range of interests and hobbies. The primary difference between Clickbank and eBay relates to the commissions paid per sale. Clickbank affiliates can earn between 25% to 75% per sale price while eBay commissions are based solely on eBay's revenue per sale and not the total sale price of the item. The majority of eBooks available on Clickbank are "How To" type ebooks. Historically these types of ebooks sell in high volumes and suit the internet given buyers generally have instant download access to the ebook they purchase. Given the digital nature of Clickbank products , promotion does involve providing more content rich web sites as potential buyers generally require more information before they make a purchase. Buyers take a different approach to eBay where generally the majority of goods purchased are still "hard goods" and most buyers already have an understanding of what they are purchasing.
