Let's cut to the chase. If you need customer support, there's nothing better than picking up the phone and dialing a 1-800 number to speak with someone in the good old USA. Unfortunately, Post Affiliate Pro is neither located in the United States nor do they have a customer service hotline.

They do, however, offer installation of their software as part of the basic purchase. In other words, it comes included.

But don't expect them to go much further than installing the software on your server and creating a database for the system.

Although affiliate marketing is the easiest business to get into because you don't have to deal with customer service, and you don't need a lot of money, it's still a pretty competitive business. Affiliate marketing does have a lot of advantages though, like having thousands of products to choose from, and any product you try to sell that doesn't sell well, you can always abandon it.

Whether you have a website or not, and whether you choose to market using free or paid techniques, you'll get started quickly if you have the right tools. There are lots of tools you can purchase to help you get started, but if you're willing to do a little research, you'll find that most of the time, there's a free version out there you can use that will work just as well.

Below are tools I recommend every affiliate have. It makes it easier to organize your information, build your business quickly, and start making money faster.

1. A good text editor

If you use a Windows based PC, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Wordpad is great for creating documents, but it's not something you want to write HTML with. Notepad is fine as a basic editor, but again, you can't really write HTML with it, and Notepad limits the number of characters you can have in a file.

What you need is a good text editor that will help you edit HTML files, write articles and sales materials, and any other tasks that require a text editor.

The best way to find a good text editor is to do a search in the search engines for free text editors. You want to search for text editors that are freeware, or open source, which are both free.

2. A good website builder

If you plan to send others through your subscription page prior to sending them to an affiliate program, or you want to create a website that showcases the affiliate programs you sell, you'll need a good website builder.

A good website builder will have a WYSIWYG interface. This is What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get. You can actually see what your site will look like as you build it. You also won't need to know how to write HTML to build your site.

A website builder is also useful if you buy premade websites of any kind. This will make it easier for you to edit those sites.

3. Keyword research tools

Whether you plan to build a website or not, you will need good keyword research tools because these tools will help you find the right keywords to use in your articles, site content, and your sales materials.

By writing keyword rich content, regardless of what content you write, this content will rank higher on the search engines, especially if it's posted on sites that rank high in the search engines. In fact, this content may even help your site rank higher if you have one.

You can find plenty of good keyword research tools online. Just search for "free keyword research tools" in your favorite search engine (with or without the quotes).

4. A PDF Creator

If you're not selling your own products, why would you need this?

It's really simple. Although a lot of affiliate program managers offer free ebooks and reports you can brand with your affiliate links (a pretty effective marketing technique for affiliates because it's viral), not everyone does.

With a word processing program, you can write your own short reports, include your affiliate links, convert it to PDF, and then give it away.

You don't need Adobe to do it either. There are plenty of free solutions available on the internet, including Open Office, which has one of the best PDF creators I've ever seen. Just do a search for "Free PDF creators".

5. Accounting software

In addition to keeping track of your affiliate programs, which can be done with a spreadsheet, you'll want to keep track of your income and expenses.

For those that live in the United States, you'll want to use single entry accounting as this is what the IRS recommends.

Like your affiliate program list, where you'll keep track of all the information related to your affiliate programs in a spreadsheet, maybe all you will need is spreadsheets for your accounting.

If you want something more comprehensive, then you should search the internet for free accounting software. Microsoft offers an "express" version of it's accounting software, but there are plenty of others you can use.

Additionally, personal finance software can sometimes be used to keep track of your business expenses and income, and you can customize the accounts to track your spending if you need to lower business expenses. Search for "free accounting software" or "free single entry accounting software." If you need software to manage your affiliate programs, then search for "personal affiliate manager".

6. Autoresponder

If you plan to build lists, whether you use minisites or content sites, you will definitely need an autoresponder. An autoresponder will save you hours and hours by taking care of all of the mundane tasks of maintaining lists, like allowing others to automatically subscribe and unsubscribe.

Although there are plenty of free, and reliable services available, these services rely on advertising to make their money. That's advertising that goes into the headers and footers of your emails you send out. Although you can start off with free services, I would recommend that you upgrade to a paid service as soon as possible.

Even if you decide not to build a website, these resources will still help you build an effective business.

If you're selling products and services on the web you've probably considered recruiting affiliates.

But should you go with a third party solution or install your own software on your website? As an experienced marketer and PHP programmer I can give you some guidelines that will make your decision easier.

Open Enrollment or Application Required?

I've run into trouble in the past by tapping into a big network of affiliates that could promote one of my products without any approval on my behalf. It wasn't long before an overly aggressive marketer started claiming that he and I were "business partners" and I found myself trying to repair relationships strained by extravagant promises made on my behalf.

Requiring affiliates to meet your requirements not only protects you, but it also adds a feeling of exclusivity to your affiliate program. Any good affiliate software system will let you screen and approve your affiliates manually or open up the system completely.

Third party services like Commission Junction and Link Share allow a vendor to restrict enrollment but other services like ClickBank do not.

Are You Selling Digital Products?

If so, then perhaps you should consider ClickBank. The startup fee is just $50 and you get access to a huge network of affiliates that have signed up with the ClickBank service. You don't have to worry about setting up a merchant account, paying your affiliates, or tracking sales. All of those functions are performed by ClickBank.

On the downside, some buyers will shy away from ClickBank products because of the hype involved with marketing some of the top products on the network.

Direct Communication

If you want to be able to communicate directly with your affiliates then using a third party service like CJ, LinkShare, or ClickBank makes it more difficult to gather the vital stats of who your affiliates are and how you can communicate with them. Affiliate software systems can be customized to make it mandatory for affiliates to sign up to your email newsletter service. At the very least, you can always export your list of affiliates into a spreadsheet and upload the list to your newsletter service.

Tiered Commission Structures

When I worked as a financial consultant for Merrill Lynch I heard the phrase: "Feed the eagles, starve the turkeys." Simply put, give the best performing salespeople more pay, more training, more attention, more resources. With affiliate software it's much easier to set up a tiered payment structure and reward your top affiliates with higher payouts.

Many third party services make it difficult or impossible to pay higher commissions to top affiliates. One innovative way around this is to marry a custom affiliate software system with the third party service so that "VIP" affiliates can be paid an extra percentage through the private affiliate software tracking.

For example, you could have an affiliate software system that pays just 5 to 10 percent of the sale and tie this in with existing sales pages. Then you would invite your top producers into this system to increase their payouts privately.

Fees

Third party services can range from a $50 setup at ClickBank to thousands of dollars. On top of this are monthly fees and percentages. Using a third party service is extremely expensive but it gives you access to large pools of talented affiliates you might not otherwise know how to find.

Most affiliate software available on the web today costs $100 to $200 with some packages requiring a much bigger investment. But the top two most popular packages run just $100 currently and work on almost any web server.

I am sitting at my desk working on tweaking the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on one of our websites and a friend walks into my office and asks what are you up to. Outsourcing is so available and affordable right now that not taking advantage of and leveraging this resource would be crazy. You can get software written, websites built, technical support in any area and even product fulfillment at a fraction of the cost it would have been 5 years ago.

You can get a DVD done with graphics on the disc, a printed insert, and a case for $1.50 to $1.75, try to do that yourself! My point is simply you cannot afford not to outsource. Doing it yourself could be costing you money and making your business more of a headache than it needs to be.

Think about downloading all the work you struggle with and being able to focus in on what you are good at and building your business. Productivity and profits are going to go up! If that thought does not put a grin on your face I don't know what would.

Once you know how to do it, making money with affiliate marketing is great. It takes a lot of work to set up the site, but once that's done, all you need to do is to kick back and enjoy the money rolling in. Not all affiliate sites work, however. That might have to do with your skill level, but there are also some other reasons affiliate sites don't work.

There are two basic questions you need to ask before you create your next site. The first question is: is there a real need for the site in the marketplace?

I wouldn't say the Internet is overcrowded. There's still plenty of room! But there are a lot of marketers, especially new ones, who get inspired by someone else's success and go out and essentially copy what that person was doing, essentially word for word.

If your idea is to build a site around the idea of breeding Yorkshire Terriers, and there are a number of sites that are focused on just that, you're going to have a hard time getting visitors to your site and also getting traffic to it.

Now, if you're stuck on making that Yorkshire Terrier site, you could always take a slightly different spin from everyone else. But if you compete in the same niche with the same essential hook, you're probably going to have problems. You need to differentiate yourself from everyone else.

Is there a need for a site like the one you're thinking about? That's the first question you need to ask yourself.

The second question is related to the first.

I've noticed lately there are a lot of spammy shopping directory type sites popping up again. I don't know if this is a fluke, or a returning trend. Shopping directory sites are the ones that have everything under the sun on them--you know the left-hand navigation bar goes "kitchen", "electronics", "women's apparel", etc. Kind of like you were listing the departments in a department store.

These sites serve no real purpose for the buyers. They're too big to be easy to use, and there's generally no content to speak of on them.

These sites are to be avoided. They're like made for AnSense sites (MFA sites). I don't know, I'm not Google, but I could easily see Google punishing them if they got to be to prolific and generally interrupted everyone's search experience.

Sure, there are a lot more consideration than these, but these two--niche, and type of site--are critical.
